An instrument cluster from a 99-02 GM pickup brought to me for a look-see, the PRNDL and odometer were dim. After a quick look I determined that the vacuum fluorescent display had a low filament (heater) power supply problem. A little flux and solder and it is good as new again.
Common problem from 1999 - 2002 GMC/Chevy Trucks with the odometer/gear shift all in one display. check the solder connections on the pins for the display, these can crack causing an intermittent flicker and eventually nothing on the display. In my case, it was just a loose / dirty connection at the top of the cluster. The circuit board was also really dirty so I cleaned it as best as I could. That combined with a shot of dielectric grease to the pin connector fixed my problem. The truck was flooded at the end because i was fooling with the ignition a lot without running the engine. Thanks for watching.
